Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Lestari Moerdijat, urged travelers joining the Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus to comply with the rules to help reduce traffic accidents and realize a safe holiday.

"Various efforts to create a safe and smooth exodus flow must be adhered to. Apart from creating safety for all, a safe and comfortable exodus flow has the potential to encourage national economic growth," she said in a statement issued by the MPR here on Monday.

The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has projected that money circulation during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr holiday would boost economic growth in the first quarter of 2024 and could reach Rp157.3 trillion (around US$9.89 billion).

Meanwhile, as per data from the National Police (Polri), as of April 7, at least 213 traffic accidents have been recorded during the Eid exodus period, which have left 23 persons dead, 39 persons severely injured, and 267 persons with minor injuries.

Moerdijat appealed to all parties to comply with the rules that have been enforced by the government, including Polri, which has been tasked with managing the exodus and return flow during the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

She underlined that it is not easy to manage millions of people traveling at almost the same time. Only through good cooperation between ministries and institutions, security forces, and the community can a safe and comfortable exodus flow be realized, she said.

She added that without good cooperation, there would be traffic congestion that would cause discomfort and delays in journeys, which could potentially affect the physical and mental health of exodus participants.

According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Transportation, 193.6 million people are expected to participate in the homecoming exodus to celebrate Eid al-Fitr this year, which is projected to fall on April 10.
