Jakarta (ANTARA) - A total of 159,557 Muslim prisoners nationwide have been granted remissions and sentence reductions to commemorate the 2024 Eid al-Fitr, according to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

Minister Yasonna Laoly stated that remission and sentence reduction are granted to inmates and children in conflict with the law who have striven to improve themselves and do good while serving their time in prison.

"Remission and sentence cut is an indicator that inmates and children in conflict with the law have observed rules in prisons and have participated in prison programs properly," Laoly noted, as per the official statement received here on Tuesday.

The minister expressed hope that the remission would motivate and embolden the prisoners' will to improve their lives and make themselves useful to others.

He also commended all prison officers who have performed their duty to supervise prisoners properly, as well as government officials, social institutions, and other agencies that have supported the ministry's works.

"I reminded you all to continue to improve yourselves, enhance your faith, and improve your personal quality. Be a person who obeys the law, has a noble personality, and is useful for the nation," Laoly remarked.
