Jakarta (ANTARA) - The construction of Indonesia's longest elevated railway at Joglo intersection, Solo, Central Java, has been running according to plan and is targeted to be completed by September 2024, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has said.

"Based on our review, the construction has been making the expected progress. God Willing, all works will be complete in September," he said after inspecting the railway's development, according to a statement received from his ministry here on Saturday.

He said that the Joglo intersection elevated railway project is a part of the development of Solo-Semarang double tracks Phase I.

According to the ministry's website, the elevated railway will stretch 1.8 kilometers, making it the longest of its kind in the country.

Sumadi said that the elevated railway is expected to help address traffic congestion at a nearby level crossing.

"There are seven roads at the Joglo intersection. When a train crosses, 30-minute congestion might occur. Hence, we are innovating by constructing a structure that can also emerge as another icon of Solo city," the minister expounded.

He further underlined that the government is constructing the elevated railway with a design that displays the icons of Solo city, such as Sidomukti batik, Klewer Market, and the keraton (royal palace).

Head of the Traffic Corps (Korlantas) of the National Police (Polri), Inspector General Aan Suhanan, who was also present during the inspection, said that the Joglo intersection is prone to both traffic congestion and accidents.

"The elevated railway serves as a solution to traffic congestion at the Joglo intersection and is expected to elevate the level of traffic safety by replacing the level crossing," he added.
