Garut (ANTARA) - Nineteen people injured after a minibus carrying domestic tourists crashed on a road section of Mount Papandayan Tourism Park in Sirnajaya Village, Cisurupan Subdistrict, Garut District, West Java, on Monday, April 15.

Three of the wounded victims were admitted to Dr.Slamet Public Hospital while 16 others were sent to Cisurupan Public Health Center to get medical treatment, Cirusupan Police Chief 1st Inspector Asep Saepudin said.

The accident occurred after the Elf minibus driver, Natim (42), lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a rock when reaching the sharp turn of Nangklak Letter S Block in Sirnajaya Village, he said.

The driver, who also got injured in the accident, lost control of the minibus with police license R 7127 IA due to a brake failure, he said, adding that the crash happened as the vehicle was heading to Cisurupan Road from the tourism park.

To prevent similar traffic accidents from recurring in the future, Saepudin suggested that drivers heading to and from the tourism park stay alert as the route has many uphill and downhill roads with sharp turns.

"Make sure that the conditions of both vehicle and driver are fit," he added.

As reported earlier, a joint survey conducted by the Transportation Ministry and Communication and Informatics Ministry shows that 193.6 million residents are expected to travel during the Eid holiday season.

They did not just return to their hometowns to celebrate the Eid festivity with family members and relatives but many of them also visited tourist destinations.

However, during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus and return flow period, which ran several days before and after the festivity, many traffic accidents had occurred in several parts of Indonesia.

According to the National Police Traffic Corps, the number of traffic accidents during the 2024 Eid homecoming exodus and return flow period declined by 15 percent compared to that of the previous year.

"Nationally, traffic accidents declined from 2,159 cases to 1,835 cases, or declined by 15 percent," according to Head of Polri's Traffic Corps Inspector General Aan Suhanan in his recent statement.

The number of fatalities due to traffic accidents also declined three percent from 291 people to 281 people.

However, the number of severely injured rose 13 percent from 281 people in 2023 to 317 people in 2024, while the number of minor injuries declined from 3,036 people to 2,424 people.

Suhanan said that the type of accidents with the highest incidence during the Eid period were head-on collisions at 433 cases, followed by rear-end collisions (379 cases).

"Rear-end meaning the vehicles did not keep the appropriate distance, or it could also be caused by drivers getting sleepy and then crashing," he said.
