"AI rapid developments and the consequent disruptions have prompted public communication workers to wield strategies for adaptation, especially ones concerning the capacity-building of human resources and organizations," he remarked in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Setiadi affirmed that PR persons need to pay close attention to AI ethics and human dimension in the utilization of technology.
In organizational aspects, he underscored the need for PR officials to apply a holistic approach to manage risks and ethics related to the use of AI, periodically evaluate internal organizational systems, and keep up with national and global AI regulations.
He further noted that the government is currently contemplating on taking horizontal or vertical approaches to prepare mature AI governance.
"We are fully aware that there are only two approaches to govern AI. European countries prefer the horizontal approach, while those in America resort to the vertical one. We have been in discussion to determine which one is the most suitable for Indonesia," he remarked.
Setiadi underlined that his ministry had been identifying ways to implement the Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) devised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
RAM constitutes a macro-level instrument for assisting countries in assessing their preparedness for utilizing AI in an ethical and responsible manner for their citizens.
The ministry has also actively participated in AI-related international forums, such as the AI Safety Summit 2023, Internet Governance Forum 2023, and UNESCO Global Forum of Ethics of AI 2024.
Setiadi then emphasized the need for a responsible public communication ecosystem to navigate rapid technological developments while urging PR officials to make the most of technology for more effective PR activities.
"In the future, technology will offer us a wide range of conveniences to facilitate various activities, including those related to public relations," he concluded.
