Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Disabilities (KND) said that gender equality is among the rights of women with disabilities, so the government must involve them in the country's development efforts.

KND Commissioner Rachmita Maun Harahap said that women with disabilities also have the right to participate in activities.

Such activities can range from participating in politics, getting legal equality, a decent living, security protection and social security, as well as education, as regulated by the law.

"Then it means equality, for example, in terms of the conditions of non-disabled women and disabled women, they must both be able to get opportunities, get the same basic rights as human beings, no less, no more," Harahap explained in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She emphasized the importance of eliminating stigma to ensure that all women living with a disability get equal treatment and rights, including enjoying the results of development, in the form of policies and infrastructure.

For that reason, KND is aggressively advocating to various ministries and institutions to ensure the participation of people with disabilities in all development activities, while erasing the stigma surrounding the disabled, who are considered incapable of participating in such activities.

"Yes, I hope that gender equality can be interpreted as no more discrimination for women with disabilities, which is always assumed," Harahap said.

"For example, I am deaf, I am always considered to not have good communication skills, even though women with disabilities can do that if they are helped with sign language, and it's the state's job to facilitate it," she explained.

She also advised women with disabilities — physical or non-physical — not to give up their enthusiasm for work and at the same time, educate the wider community so that the stigma surrounding disabilities can be eradicated little by little.
