Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) would spotlight the vital role of water infrastructure for maintaining food and energy security at the 10th World Water Forum in Bali.

"The 10th World Water Forum in Bali can highlight the vital role of water infrastructure in maintaining food and energy security," the ministry's Special Staff to the PUPR Minister for Water Resources, Firdaus Ali, told ANTARA on Monday.

According to Ali, efforts to elevate the role of water infrastructure were carried out through debate forums that discuss the effectiveness of water infrastructure management strategies to support agricultural irrigation in ensuring food security and hydroelectric energy production, including floating solar power plants (PLTSA), to support the achievement of a non-fossil energy mix.

Encouraging policy integration between the water, food, and energy sectors to realize synergy and efficiency in resource use was also deemed crucial, he emphasized.

He said that the ministry would also showcase successful water infrastructure in supporting agriculture and energy production, as examples for other countries.

The discussion of climate change links the importance of resilient water infrastructure in climate change that can increase resilience to extreme weather, thereby affecting food and energy security, Ali explained.

Indonesia was appointed to host the 10th World Water Forum, the first in the Southeast Asian region, which will take place in Nusa Dua, Bali, on May 18-25, 2024, by the World Water Council (WWC).

This international forum is structured around three approaches, namely the Thematic Process that provides a substantive basis for water issues or problems; the Regional Process that provides perspectives on water from all regions; and the Political Process that offers a platform for discussions with stakeholders.

Experts will also attend the forum consisting of 280 sessions, including sessions for the young generation to play an important role in water management.

Ali stated that the World Water Forum discusses the importance of water in people's lives globally and brings together various sectors, such as food, energy, environment, and health, in accordance with the theme of "Water for Shared Prosperity" raised at the 2024 World Water Forum.
