Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Transportation Ministry has said that the 27 new airports built by President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi's) administration have helped improve connectivity in the outermost, remote, disadvantaged and border areas (3TP).

"The development of air transportation infrastructure in Indonesia has made significant progress, the main achievement, among others, is the construction of 27 new airports," the ministry's director general of air transportation, M. Kristi Endah Murni, said in a statement issued here on Thursday.

Murni informed that under President Widodo's leadership from 2014 to 2024, Indonesia has achieved many air transportation infrastructure development goals aimed at improving connectivity and services to the community, especially in 3TP regions.

Under Widodo's leadership, Indonesia has succeeded in expanding its airport network by building more airports across the regions, including in the 3TP areas, she informed.

"This has increased the accessibility and mobility of local communities and encouraged economic growth in areas that were previously difficult to reach," she said.

She added that out of the 27 airports, Sobaham Airport is under construction and will be completed by the end of this year.

In addition to the new airports, the government has carried out the rehabilitation and development of existing airports with the goal of improving service standards and flight safety.

At least 64 airports have been rejuvenated with new facilities, such as extended runways and expanded terminals.

Through the construction and development of air transportation infrastructure, Murni said, the government aims to encourage economic growth in marginalized areas.

"This creates new investment opportunities, drives the tourism sector, and expands the market for local products," she explained.

Moreover, airports can support access to health, education, and other social services in remote areas, which can improve people's living standards and reduce inequalities between regions, she added.
