This draft government regulation is a breakthrough and innovation from the Environment and Forestry Ministry to tackle various issues on sustainability and environmental functions that Indonesia is currently facing.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar has called for active participation from all parties to jointly realize a good and healthy environment amid rapid economic growth, which can cause sustainability issues.

"Air pollution, clean water crisis, hazardous waste, loss of biodiversity, and climate change are challenges that are haunting (regions) in the modern era," she said in a statement released by her ministry in Jakarta on Friday.

She added that an increase in land conversion can also cause a decline in environmental benefits, with the carrying capacity of the environment tending to decrease and the costs of environmental restoration to mitigate development impacts and risks increasing.

In view of this, the ministry began preparing the Draft Government Regulation on Environmental Protection and Management Planning (RPP-PPPLH) in 2010, as a mandate of Law Number 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management.

"This draft government regulation is a breakthrough and innovation from the Environment and Forestry Ministry to tackle various issues on sustainability and environmental functions that Indonesia is currently facing," she said.

The minister informed that the draft regulation contains 11 chapters that focus on important issues, including environmental inventory, determination of ecoregions, and environmental carrying capacity, as well as the Environmental Protection and Management Plan (RPPLH).

The National RPPLH includes the main points of the situation and problems faced in environmental protection and management, scenarios for environmental protection and management based on the ecoregion approach, and main points of plans per island or islands.

Bakar emphasized that the implementation of the regulation will require collaboration and synergy from all parties such as ministries, institutions, private parties, academicians, and civil society.

"With those points, it is clear that this plan is a long-term step for environmental protection and management," she said.
