Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, has said that the government has postponed the mandatory halal certification of products to 2026, particularly for micro and small enterprises.

"The President has decided that for food, beverage, and others, the implementation would be postponed, not (October) 2024 but 2026," he announced after a limited meeting on halal certification at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

He informed that micro enterprises are those whose sales are in the range of Rp1 billion (around US$62,586) to Rp2 billion (around US$125,295) per year.

Small enterprises are those whose sales reach up to Rp15 billion (around US$939,718) per year.

He said that the policy has also been postponed for products in the traditional, herbal, and other medicines, cosmetics and chemical products, accessories, household goods, and medical device categories.

Meanwhile, for medium and large enterprises, the mandatory halal certification policy will be applied in October.

One of the considerations for postponing the halal certification requirement for micro and small businesses is that the achievement of the halal certification target per year has reached just above 4 million compared to the target of 10 million certifications.

For products from other countries, the halal certification obligation will apply after the countries sign a mutual recognition arrangement (MRA).

"According to a report from the Religious Affairs Minister, 16 countries have signed the MRA," he informed.

Hartarto further said that the halal certification obligation is only for businesses that have business identification numbers (NIB).

Therefore, the government is encouraging street vendors to obtain NIBs as a requirement for halal certification.
