Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has said that the implementation of a smart transportation system is an effort to equalize and improve safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation in Indonesia.

"We must put our focus in efforts to achieve those goals. This can be achieved by utilizing technological developments in the transportation sector, including through the smart transportation system," he added at the opening of the 19th Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Asia-Pacific Forum 2024 at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on Tuesday.

According to Amin, efforts to implement the smart transportation system must be carried out in line with the rising population and the increasingly complex global challenges faced by the world's population.

"Several issues such as population density, environmental damage, and information technology disruption require innovative solutions. The high level of urbanization has also increased economic and social inequality in cities, including unequal transportation facilities, which can affect people's quality of life," he added.

He expressed the hope that the smart transportation system will reduce congestion, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy consumption, as well as improve safety.

The Vice President said that the development of technological innovations in the transportation sector is expected to increase cost, time, and connectivity efficiency, and thereby encourage the growth of economic activities.

At the same forum, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that the global population is continuing to grow rapidly, with the majority of people living in urban areas.

It is estimated that two-thirds of the world's population will live in cities by 2050, he noted

"This brings challenges for the transportation sector, such as traffic jams, accidents, obstruction of goods transportation services, and carbon gas pollution," he added.

Smart transportation systems can help solve these problems by using various technologies, Sumadi said.

"Smart transportation systems can help us overcome the challenges of rapid urbanization, climate change, and technological advances. These systems offer efficiency, safety, and sustainability in the movement of people and goods," the minister added.
