"In this place, we will carry out economic transformation and the development of green economics and green energy," he remarked at the groundbreaking ceremony for the hub's construction in Nusantara capital city (IKN) in North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan, on Wednesday.
Jokowi noted that the green aspect of Nusantara will be supported by the use of electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions in the area, which is designed as a forest city. His target is to maintain the air quality index in the city at 20.
"Earlier, I checked the air quality index at North Penajam Paser, which was 34. In the IKN, it should be around 20," he emphasized.
He lauded the development of the Nusantara Sustainability Hub by state-owned firm Pertamina and private company Bakrie Group, in partnership with Stanford University.
The hub is expected to attract global companies and other universities interested in developing a green and sustainable economy in Indonesia.
Spanning 2.5 hectares, the Nusantara Sustainability Hub is projected to be the "Green Silicon Valley" in Southeast Asia. Its primary functions will include research and development in four key areas: sustainable urban cities, carbon markets, energy transition, and blue food.
Pertamina will utilize the Nusantara Sustainability Hub as a research and development center for new environment-friendly energy sources, including sorghum stems as a substitute for CPO for biodiesel, mangroves, and sea algae.
With the support of research and technology, Pertamina aims to develop the domestic industry and create employment opportunities, ultimately leading to reduced energy imports and lowered carbon emissions.
