"Next year, we need to do it again, namely mapping regional languages and literature because it turns out that in 2019, when we had a map of regional languages in Indonesia, that map is no longer relevant," Aminudin Aziz, head of the Language Development Agency, said at a working meeting with Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The remapping of regional languages and literature will be included in the Regional Language Protection program next year with a budget of Rp9.1 billion, he disclosed.
He explained that the remapping of regional languages and literature is needed because the current maps of regional languages and literature are no longer relevant considering the massive developments of the times.
He said that the status of many regional languages has changed — some have begun to lose speakers, and new languages have been discovered that are not recorded on the old map.
"Then, we will remap the regional language and literature," he added.
The remapping exercise, he informed, will be carried out next year, and it will include efforts to revitalize regional languages.
The Language Development Agency has been making efforts to revitalize regional languages since 2021, when it revitalized five regional languages.
So far, 93 regional languages have been revitalized, and it is hoped that their number will reach 100 by next year.
