Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Youth and Sports will provide educational scholarships to athletes who earned medals at the ASEAN School Games (ASG) 2024, held in Da Nang, Vietnam, from June 1–7.

Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo said that he is proud of the achievements of the Indonesian contingent, which strived to make the nation proud and placed second in the multi-sport event's medal table overall.

"We will provide scholarships to athletes who earned gold, silver, and bronze. We will also provide rewards to the coaches," he announced at the welcoming event for the Indonesian contingent for the ASG 2024 at the ministry's office in Jakarta on Monday.

He noted that at the event, which marked its 13th edition in 2024, Indonesia clinched 22 gold, 22 silver, and 20 bronze medals in six sports.

The six sports were athletics, badminton, swimming, basketball, pencak silat (Indonesian martial art), and vovinam (Vietnamese martial art).

In addition to athletes, Ariotedjo also expressed his appreciation to coaches, officials, and sports federations for the guidance that they provided to the athletes.

According to him, the role of stakeholders is very crucial. He also lauded parents for supporting the Indonesian contingent during the event.

The Indonesian contingent could not meet the overall champion target set by the government, losing to host Vietnam, which finished as the overall champion.

However, Indonesia broke records in two sports at this year's ASG: Arya Adrean in the men's 50-meter breaststroke (swimming) and the men's team in basketball by beating the Philippines team in the final round.

The swimming team contributed the most gold medals at 11.

Here is the breakup of the number of medals that Indonesia won at ASG 2024:

  1. Athletics: 2 gold, 5 silver, 6 bronze
  2. Badminton: 2 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze
  3. Pencak silat: 5 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze
  4. Vovinam: 1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze
