The BNPT stated that the signing marked an initial milestone in the commitment to combating terrorism in both countries.
"The signing of this agreement is the first milestone in a joint commitment to fight all forms of terrorism," BNPT Deputy for International Cooperation Andhika Chrisnayudhanto noted in a statement from his office on Tuesday.
Reflecting on the experience of earlier collaborations, the BNPT is optimistic that the collaboration with Romania will be effective and impactful for both nations.
According to Chrisnayudhanto, Indonesia and Romania had earlier inked an agreement on cooperation in preventing and eradicating transnational organized crimes, terrorism, and other types of crimes in 2006.
"We are optimistic that the current cooperation will be effective and have a positive impact on both countries," he remarked.
The signing of the CT Cooperation Arrangement was held in Bali on June 6. Dan Adrian Balanescu, the Romanian ambassador to Indonesia, represented Romania, while Chrisnayudhanto represented Indonesia.
On this occasion, Balanescu expressed similar optimism about the benefits of this collaboration.
According to the Romanian ambassador, the Arrangement on CT Cooperation will have an impact on his country despite the threat of terrorism in Romania being relatively low.
“The level of terrorism threat in Romania is currently low. However, we are optimistic that this cooperation will provide benefits for Romania," he affirmed.
The Arrangement on CT Cooperation encompasses several scopes, starting with exchanging information, sharing good practices, fostering cooperation in the field of prevention, holding exchange visits from experts, and strengthening capacity through conferences, seminars, and training.
Another form of international cooperation carried out by BNPT with other ASEAN countries and Australia is the ratification of the ASEAN-Australia Counter-Terrorism Workshop on Good Practice Approaches for the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Their Families on June 3.
