An inclusive and efficient transportation system can be a catalyst for encouraging economic growth, reducing social inequality, and even strengthening a country's ecological foundation.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Public transportation is not limited to moving people from one place to another, but a reflection of a country's social and economic values, a researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Badrun Susantyo, said.

"An inclusive and efficient transportation system can be a catalyst for encouraging economic growth, reducing social inequality, and even strengthening a country's ecological foundation," he added here on Tuesday.

He said that a humanist transportation policy and system needs to be built to cater to the basic human need for accessibility.

According to him, Indonesia's geographical features pose public transportation challenges.

Therefore, he said, there is a need for designing and implementing solutions that are integrated and accessible to all levels of society to answer these challenges.

"One of the main challenges we face is the construction of equitable transportation infrastructure. This is a very tough challenge for our country," he informed.

He also highlighted inadequate transportation infrastructure in remote areas.

"In remote areas, the existing transportation infrastructure is still far from being enough. This has a direct impact on people's accessibility," he said.

Meanwhile, the Transportation Ministry's Greater Jakarta Transportation Management Agency said that for 2020–2024, it is focusing on several strategic goals, namely basic service infrastructure, economic infrastructure, and urban infrastructure.

The agency's director, Zamrides, said that infrastructure development policies focus on strengthening land transportation connectivity, starting from road and network development, service management, to regional planning.

The policies also aim to improve the integration of transportation modes through physical, institutional, schedule, payment, and service and system integration.

"Sustainable transportation includes economic, social, and environmental aspects that will later have an impact on the feasibility of public transportation services as the backbone of the people's mobility," he said.
