Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is planning on putting a temporary halt on the construction of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) ahead of the national ceremony of the 79th Anniversary of Indonesia's Independence Day on August 17.

"We plan on stopping construction activities, excluding some minor works, a week ahead of the Independence Day ceremony. By August 10, we will have halted mobilization activities, such as those involving trucks," Chairman of the IKN Infrastructure Development Task Force Danis Sumadilaga remarked here on Saturday.

During the pause period, he stated that the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry would not dismiss the construction workers and instead provide them with other beneficial activities.

As for administrative workers and those working indoors, Sumadilaga explained that they will continue to work as usual since the temporary halt will only last for six days until the end of the national ceremony.

"Indoor workers will work as usual. As for those working outdoors, we will organize special activities for them, such as sports and certification training, so that they will remain occupied. The pause will only last for six days," he pointed out.

Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy stated that the presidential palaces in Nusantara and Jakarta will both host a national ceremony to commemorate the 79th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence.

According to the plan, President Joko Widodo will chair the upcoming ceremony at IKN. Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to accompany the head of state during the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, accompanied by Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, will chair another ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

President Widodo noted that the decision to hold two national ceremonies was taken on account of the ongoing capital city transition.

He said that Nusantara will serve as the sole host of the 2025 Independence Day national ceremony after a presidential decree on the transfer of the capital city is issued.
