"The central and regional governments must support the elections by ensuring a peaceful and orderly situation," he remarked during the coordination meeting on preparations for the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections in the Sumatra region followed online from Jakarta on Tuesday.
Tjahjanto noted that the regional governments play a crucial role in this matter since leaders in regions wield the authority to formulate regional policies that can facilitate the holding of an election.
The minister then highlighted that regional leaders can extend support for the elections by allocating and mobilizing requisite budgets.
In this context, he said that the central government might also provide regions with budgets dedicated to the holding of the elections, noting that it requires a sound level of coordination between the governments to ensure proper allocation and utilization of the budgets.
He affirmed that regional governments can support election organizers by providing them with operational facilities, such as offices and voting locations.
The minister deemed it imperative for regional governments to partake in maintaining a safe and secure situation during the stages of elections by collaborating with military and police services.
He also drew attention to the need for all state apparatuses in the central and regional governments to remain politically neutral during elections.
Earlier, the minister underscored that 2024 would be Indonesia's biggest year of politics, considering that the presidential, legislative, and regional leader elections are due in a single year.
He also highlighted that in the 2024 Regional Elections, Indonesian citizens in 37 provinces and 508 districts and cities across Indonesia will vote for their preferred local leader candidates simultaneously on November 27.
