Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Saudi Arabia agreed to cooperate to advance intellectual property through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday.

Director general of intellectual property at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Min Usihen, said that the main goal of the agreement is building a bilateral cooperation framework on intellectual property based on equality and mutual benefit.

"This framework is expected to create beneficial synergy in intellectual property management and development in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, in accordance with laws and rules that apply in each country," she said in a statement released by the ministry here on Thursday.

The MoU was signed by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property and the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property on the sidelines of the 65th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Usihen informed that the MoU covers several important aspects, such as intellectual property strategy, information technology development, and exchange of consultation and experience on the latest technology, including artificial intelligence for intellectual property.

The MoU also covers the promotion and improvement of awareness on the importance of intellectual property values, respect and enforcement of intellectual property, as well as discussions on the development of best practices in the intellectual property processes, including the Patent Prosecution Highway.

She explained that the process will have an impact on the efficiency and acceleration of examination, allowing quicker decisions on the granting of patents to applicants from other countries.

The two parties, she said, have agreed to share feedback on challenges faced in the development of intellectual property systems and networks for the creation and utilization of intellectual property.

"Other areas of cooperation that can be mutually agreed upon in written form will also be explored further," she added.

Usihen expressed the hope that the signing of the MoU will have a positive impact on the intellectual property policies of the governments of Indonesia and Saudi Arabia as well as intellectual property stakeholders in the two countries.

She further said that through the cooperation, the two countries can learn from each other and benefit from each other's experience in managing intellectual property. WIPO would also benefit from increased international cooperation that could bolster the global intellectual property system.
