Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga underscored the importance of Indonesian children boosting their digital intelligence to safeguard against the adversarial impacts of digital technology.
"All of us, be it children or adults, must work together to improve our digital intelligence. That way, we will be able to fortify ourselves against digital detriments in cyberspace," she remarked during the Children's Expression Festival in Jakarta on Thursday.
Puspayoga underlined that Indonesian children are the future of the nation and wield various potentials. She said children are growing up in an era where digital technologies have become an integral part of their day-to-day lives.
"While the internet offers a wide range of conveniences, it is imperative for us to utilize the technology in a prudent and responsible manner. Unfortunately, not all children can get the most out of technological development," she said.
The minister observed that several children had instead fallen victim to the misuse of the internet while noting that some of them are addicted to gadgets, online games, and also online gambling.
Moreover, she pointed out that the digital space has become a place where children are being exploited economically and sexually while their private data is being exposed.
On that note, Puspayoga deemed it paramount for young Indonesian talents to tap into their potential, build confidence, and enhance their digital literacy.
"At this festival, children can have fun while making new friends and boosting their understanding of a healthy and safe digital space. I want you to progress by creating positive works," she told children attending the event.
The Children's Expression Festival is part of a series of activities prepared to welcome the 2024 National Children's Day, which will be celebrated on July 23, 2024.
