Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA) - Acting governor of North Sumatra, Agus Fatoni, has invited residents to break the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI) record for the most volunteers in the National Sports Week (PON).

"As we are honored to host the 2024 PON, I invite all elements of the society to make the event a success by being involved as volunteers," he said here on Wednesday.

According to him, the success of the national sports event cannot be realized by the government alone and requires the community's support.

He then asked all relevant policy makers to bolster PON volunteer recruitment.

He has also issued a letter to the PON committee, mayors, and district heads to intensify the promotion of 2024 PON down to the village level.

Fatoni said that the massive promotion is aimed at motivating the community to serve as volunteers at the PON event.

"To host this event is a rare opportunity, so let's make it a success; this is our opportunity to show that North Sumatra is great," he remarked.

Meanwhile, the North Sumatra PON Committee reported that around 14 thousand people have registered as volunteers for the event.

"Since the opening of registration, 14 thousand people have registered as volunteers for PON North Sumatra," Ismael Sinaga, a human resources staff of the committee, informed.

Sinaga said that the number is still low since his side was targeting to enlist as many as 70 thousand volunteers.

However, the committee will continue to promote the opportunity to become volunteers by involving elements of society and policy makers, he added.

"We are optimistic that the number of volunteers can meet the target before the PON implementation," he said.

The National Sports Week will take place in two provinces, Aceh and North Sumatra, from September 8 to 20, 2024. Featuring 67 sports, the event will involve more than 11,600 athletes and 5,800 officials from all 38 provinces in the country.
