Jakarta (ANTARA) - Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Teten Masduki and Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) chairperson Arsjad Rasjid discussed strategies to increase the exports of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) on Wednesday.

After the meeting in Jakarta, Masduki said that Kadin has devised a number of effective strategies that are expected to boost the value of national exports. To advance the exports of MSME products, Kadin favors business matching activities, he informed.

He said that his ministry and Kadin will look for potential export markets and identify potential MSMEs that will be assisted in penetrating the overseas markets.

The minister then pointed to several obstacles hindering MSME actors from increasing exports, including limited production capacity, high logistics costs, and uncertainties regarding the continuity, quantity, and quality of products.

To deal with these problems, the government needs to formulate on-point policies that can provide protection to domestic MSMEs from the surging inflow of cheaper imported goods, he said.

"We cannot afford to devise policies that will instead harm domestic industries, including MSMEs," he stressed.

Kadin's Rasjid, on his part, underlined that business matching events are the key to helping MSMEs scale up exports.

Business matching activities can help Indonesian MSME players find the right market by helping provide an interface with potential foreign buyers.

The Kadin chairperson also stressed the importance of creating alternative financing schemes that suit the conditions and needs of MSMEs. He said that he is in favor of applying the credit scoring system for the purpose to assess MSME actors' creditworthiness.

He further asserted that it is vital that the government make all-out efforts to combat illegal imports that are threatening domestic businesses, with MSMEs being no exception.

Rasjid then spoke about his meeting with Masduki, saying that it resulted in various suggestions that will be included in a white paper by Kadin.

He added that the white paper will be handed over to the next government led by Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka to provide them with points of consideration that are expected to assist them when formulating economic policies, including on MSMEs.
