Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency (BNN), along with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, thwarted the smuggling of 214 packages of marijuana from Thailand with a net weight of 113.65 kilograms destined for Liverpool, England.

BNN's Deputy for Eradication Brigadier General I Wayan Sugiri furnished details regarding the disclosure of marijuana smuggling from Thailand with information received from Customs officers at Soekarno-Hatta Airport about a package sent from Thailand suspected of containing narcotics. BNN received this information on July 24, 2024.

"Suspects, with the initials AS and MM, have been detained. The marijuana packages were sent by BN, who is still on the hunt," Sugiri noted in a press conference on Monday.

The marijuana packages were found at two places, with the first being at the Jaka Permai Housing Complex, Bekasi, West Java, with 60 packages of evidence weighing 31.88 kg stored in five sacks containing 10 bed covers.

The second batch was found in the Cipinang Melayu area, East Jakarta, with 154 packages weighing 81.77 kg, stored in 29 boxes containing camping equipment and three boxes containing vacuum cleaners.

"These various marijuana packages were found in flavors such as strawberry heist and tropical passion," Sugiri explained.

According to the brigadier general, details about the marijuana package came to light with information from AS, who visited the Soekarno-Hatta Airport import warehouse to pick up the package. BNN officers arrested the person concerned on July 25, 2024, at 14:30 local time.

The joint team of BNN and Customs then monitored the shipment to Bekasi. At around 18:30 local time, officers managed to secure MM, the person who ordered AS and also the owner of PT CAS.

In the second place, the disclosure of narcotics evidence came from the interrogation of AS and MM, stating that the marijuana package would be sent to England via the PT HL expedition service.

Officers from BNN and Customs then moved to the expedition location in Cipinang Melayu, East Jakarta, and found a pile of cardboard boxes containing marijuana.

On account of these actions, the suspects were charged with Article 114, paragraph (2); Article 132, paragraph (1); and Article 113, paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.
