Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Health Ministry will summon the Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital (RSCM) to discuss the detection of 60 cases of kidney failure in children by the hospital.

"I will summon representatives from RSCM; this is related to the kidney failure cases," Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin informed at the Tebet Community Health Center (Puskesmas), South Jakarta, on Tuesday.

According to him, health workers at puskesmas conducted a massive screening for adults and children and recorded their findings.

However, the cases were recorded over a long period, the minister said.

"Puskesmas had conducted 200 million screenings of more than 60 million people. It showed data of children with high blood sugar," he added.

Detection of high blood sugar leads to a diagnosis of type two diabetes in children, the minister noted.

Therefore, special treatment is needed, including by referral to RSCM, Sadikin said.

"Kidney failure cases at hospitals did not suddenly increase because of an extraordinary event, but because it was not detected in the past," he added.

Therefore, his ministry urged kidney failure patients to raise their awareness about the disease through screening at the hospital so they can get better treatment.

Sadikin also urged the public to reduce sugar intake which can lead to stroke, kidney failure, and eye diseases.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Health Service previously reported that 60 children underwent kidney failure therapy at RSCM.

The DKI provincial government provided seven pediatric specialists sub-specializing in nephrology to treat children with kidney failure.

The seven specialists were stationed at several hospitals — four at RSCM, two at Bunda Harapan Kita Children's Hospital, and one at Pantai Indah Kapuk Hospital.

Kidney failure in children can be treated with dialysis therapy.
