Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar has urged regional governments and various parties to support climate action at the grassroots level, including through the Climate Village Program (ProKlim).

At the ProKlim awards in Jakarta on Friday, Bakar said that ProKlim, which has been expanded into the Community for Climate Program, is inseparable from national climate action, which has been included in Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) document.

Since its launch 13 years ago, ProKlim has reached 10,113 locations in the country, with the target of reaching 20 thousand locations in 2024. The number reflects a significant growth from just around 4 thousand locations in 2015.

To reach the target, the minister called for consolidation among all parties within the Ministry of Environment and Forestry considering the potential to increase the number of communities and locations involved in climate change adaptation and mitigation programs under each directorate general.

Bakar cited several programs that can be used to increase the number of communities and locations, such as the Adiwiyata School or Green School program, Social Forestry, conservation partnerships, Peatland Care Community, and Fire-Conscious Community.

"In total, it is actually possible to reach 42 thousand (locations), not only 20 thousand. Nevertheless, let us consolidate, let us work hard for that," the minister added.

On the occasion, she underlined that the ProKlim awards are given as a form of recognition for the hard work of parties implementing ProKlim as well as regional heads assisting in the program's implementation.

According to the Environment and Forestry Minister's Regulation Number 19 of 2012, ProKlim is a national-level program aimed at improving the community's capacity to adapt to the impact of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
