Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has underscored the need to develop a database of the fast food and beverage industry to optimize the limitation of sugar, salt, and fat (GGL) consumption.

Head of the BRIN's Research Group for Knowledge-Based Economy Bahtiar Rifai, when contacted here on Wednesday, informed that those who meet the provisions regarding GGL content in their products can also be certified.

He said that so far, the data used for the implementation of GGL limitation pertains to processed food registered with the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), with processed food products required to bear nutrition facts labels.

However, the processed packaged food industry only accounts for 20 percent of the total food intake of Indonesian people, while 80 percent of food intake comes from the fast food and beverage industry, he pointed out.

To this end, he stressed the need for additional efforts from the government targeting fast food producers so that the GGL limitation can be made more effective.

Furthermore, Rifai noted that the imposition of excise tax on food and beverage products containing GGL, in accordance with the Government Regulation on Health, could directly push the creation of a healthy and quality food ecosystem.

However, he said, to see the impact of the regulation comprehensively and measurably, the government must conduct regulatory impact analysis (RIA) continuously to determine the changes in the health, economic, and social aspects.

Earlier on Monday, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that industries are ready to implement the Government Regulation on Health.

Regarding the imposition of the excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages and processed food, he informed that industries will be given stages and a transition period to make adjustments.
