Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) conducted a program to rehabilitate uninhabitable homes occupied by underprivileged families in Kulon Progo district, Yogyakarta province, to help lower stunting prevalence.

BKKBN head Hasto Wardoyo said on Saturday that the program targeted the homes of three families in the Tegalrejo, Clapar, and Klepu areas of Hargowilis village.

"One of the houses was not equipped with a clean latrine. Hence, we took the initiative to build one," he informed in Kulon Progo.

Wardoyo underlined that the home rehabilitation program is a means to improve the quality of residents' sanitation while noting that lack of clean water and proper sanitation systems contributes to around 70 percent of stunting cases in Indonesia.

"This program is targeting uninhabitable residences occupied by families that have toddlers, pregnant women, and fertile couples," he added.

He said that the BKKBN coordinated with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing to identify houses and families deserving help via the program.

He added that the house rehabilitation program is mostly funded by the State Budget (APBN) and regional budgets (APBD). In Kulon Progo, the program was funded by third parties.

In addition to improving the quality of homes, he added, the BKKBN also disseminated information on the Family Planning program to locals.

During his visit to Clapar area, Wardoyo also participated in the distribution of food assistance to several residents.

Warsidi, the head of Hargowilis village, admitted that some of his people are still living in uninhabitable houses without proper sanitation systems.

"Hence, we are very grateful for the house renovations offered by the BKKBN," he said.
