Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's desire for social validation can be leveraged to promote a sustainable lifestyle, according to Sophie Kirana, crowned Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan 2024.

Speaking at the International Sustainability Forum (ISF) in Jakarta on Friday, she affirmed that in the pursuit of validation, people tend to adopt practices widely followed by others. She highlighted the common belief that something is right or true when many people are doing it.

"With this phenomenon of social validation, I think we can leverage it by collaborating with public figures who can inspire a larger community, create an impact, and demonstrate what sustainable living looks like on a daily basis," Kirana remarked.

She pointed to a common misconception about sustainability, where many believe it is only about buying eco-friendly products.

"I define sustainability as the act of being highly conscious without harming the environment, taking actions that do not cause damage," she noted.

She expressed hope that people would adopt this lifestyle, incorporating habits that promote sustainability into their daily routines.

On the same occasion, the Ambassador of Norway to Indonesia, Rut Krüger Giverin, stated that everyone has a role in promoting sustainability by promoting habits and creating eco-friendly products that are both affordable for consumers and profitable for companies.

However, Giverin said she believes such a lifestyle can only be encouraged if the system supports it. She cited her experience in Norway, where all product packaging included small icons indicating the appropriate containers for disposal.

"And once it is there, where am I going to deliver it?" she remarked. "I also feel confident that local authorities will properly manage and process it in the best possible ways, contributing to a circular economy."

Giverin emphasized the need for governments to encourage such a lifestyle by creating policies or regulations that provide clear information and incentives, as well as by convincing people that the government is truly committed to supporting sustainable living.
