Reog Ponorogo is a traditional performing art and folk entertainment that originated in Ponorogo, East Java.
Penajam Paser Utara, E Kaliman (ANTARA) - The Reog Ponorogo performance at the 2024 Nusantara Culture Harmony Festival in Penajam Paser Utara district, near Nusantara capital city (IKN), East Kalimantan, captured the district's cultural diversity, according to an official.

"The Reog performance is a form of cultural expression in this harmonious district," assistant deputy for cultural promotion and preservation at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, Andre Notohamijoyo, said here on Saturday.

The Reog Ponorogo group of Singi Koyo Nusontoro Art Studio, Sepaku sub-district, was founded by several migrants and now, their performance has developed and adapted to the local milieu.

"The Reog performance also strengthens the national campaign of proposing reog, kebaya, and kolintang (a traditional musical instrument) as world cultural heritage to UNESCO in 2024," Notohamijoyo said.

He informed that the Reog group was established through the cooperation of several members. The donations collected were used to purchase equipment for the performance.

The group has so far participated in several national art festivals, including in East Kalimantan.

"The Reog Ponorogo performance was also supported by the East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan (culture) preservation center. This is a form of collaboration between the government and stakeholders," Notohamijoyo informed.

The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture held the Nusantara Culture Harmony Festival from September 5–7, 2024, in Penajam Paser Utara district with the aim of revitalizing local culture around the national capital area.

"The IKN development is not to eliminate local identity and culture, but pay attention to ecological, economic, social, and cultural aspects," the ministry's deputy for the improvement of children, women, and youth quality, Woro Srihastuti, said on Friday.
