Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Japanese government has disbursed a loan of 140 billion yen (around 990 million US dollars) to support the construction of Phase 1 of Jakarta's East-West Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line. The 24.5-kilometer line will connect Medansatria with Tomang.

Japanese Ambassador Masaki Yasushi announced the funding during a launch event at Thamrin MRT Station on Wednesday with President Joko Widodo.

He expressed gratitude to the Indonesian government for its efforts in the important infrastructure project.

Yasushi emphasized the MRT's symbolic value as a testament to the strong Indonesia-Japan partnership under President Widodo's administration.

He said he believes that the MRT will contribute significantly to Jakarta's future development.

The ongoing construction of Phase 2a of the North-South MRT line, connecting Hotel Indonesia with Kota, reflects the government's commitment to expanding the city's integrated MRT network.

Currently, the progress of the 5.6-kilometer Phase 2A has reached 40 percent.

The MRT Phase 2A project is divided into two segments — segment 1 from HI Roundabout to Harmoni, targeted to be completed in 2027; and segment 2 from Harmoni to Kota, scheduled for completion in 2029.

Meanwhile, the East-West Corridor MRT Phase 1, a joint effort by the Ministry of Transportation, DKI Jakarta provincial government, and PT MRT Jakarta is expected to become operational in 2031.

President Widodo highlighted that since it started operations, the Jakarta MRT has served around 120 million passengers — a significant public transportation achievement in the capital city.

"MRT will support Jakarta as a global city, Jakarta as an agglomeration city with its surroundings, and achieving civilization with modern transportation after it is completed," Widodo said.
