Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and a Brazil-based company established investment collaboration valued at Rp4.5 trillion (or around US$291.9 million) for the development of 100 thousand tropical dairy cattle, Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman stated.

"The presence of this Brazil investor can support our effort to realize meat and dairy self-sufficiency," he noted in a statement here on Friday.

Earlier, PT Asiabeef Biofarma Indonesia inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Agropecuaria 31 (31 Group).

Minister Sulaiman remarked that through the collaboration to develop livestock on a massive scale, Indonesia can meet the needs of beef and dairy within the country and not through imports.

"This investment will create new jobs in various livestock sectors," he remarked.

After a meeting with Brazil's Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Favaro, Sulaiman stated that several large Brazilian business players have shown interest in Indonesia's livestock sector.

With this high level of interest among Brazilian entrepreneurs, he expressed hope that both countries would make follow-up agreements on livestock development.

The Indonesia-Brazil bilateral meeting was held after the G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting (AMM) in Chapada Dos Guimaraes, Brazil.

Sulaiman affirmed that the Indonesian government is committed to continuing the transformation of the agriculture and food system through holistic ways.

Meanwhile, he highlighted that the commitment to transforming the agriculture sector has resulted in positive outcomes.

"Indonesia achieved rice self-sufficiency in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and in recent years, produced corn, shallots, palm oil, chicken, and eggs in surplus to meet the needs of 281 million Indonesians," he noted.

He underscored the need to take prompt strategic steps in agriculture, as the global population is estimated to reach 8.6 billion by 2030.

"We must increase food production while conserving our depleting natural resources," Sulaiman stated.
