Sudaryano emphasized that the ministry is committed to finding solutions, such as providing appropriate agricultural equipment and irrigation pumping technology, to ease the farmers' challenges.
As part of the Increasing Planting Index Movement, he interacted with farmers in Gunung Binjai, East Balikpapan.
One of the movement's programs includes supplying irrigation pumps to farmers.
Following discussions with locals, it was noted that the agricultural land in Balikpapan spans 97 hectares, with 25 hectares currently planted.
The deputy minister also underscored the need for the regeneration of farmers. He said that the young generation is doubtful about the sector due to the not-so-promising profits. The government has also issued a regional regulation to protect land from conversion.
Sudaryano remarked that agricultural land in Balikpapan could potentially supply food for the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) as well as the local area.
However, challenges such as dominant pests, including monkeys, need to be addressed.
The deputy minister also highlighted the importance of regenerating the farming workforce. He noted that the younger generation is skeptical about the sector due to its perceived lack of profitability.
To attract more young people to farming, Sudaryano suggested providing quality seeds to increase productivity, which could boost farmers' incomes.
He stressed the need for mechanization in agriculture to support the successful emergence of a new generation of farmers.
