Deli Serdang, N Sumatra (ANTARA) - North Sumatra runner Nella Agustin made her home province proud by sweeping three gold medals at the 2024 Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON).

She won gold in the women's 200-meter race on Friday (September 13, 2024), the women's 400m hurdles on Monday (September 16), and the mixed 4x400m competition at the Athletic Sport Center Stadium in Deli Serdang on Tuesday.

The North Sumatra contingent for the mixed 4x400m event comprised Agustin, Siska Simamora, M. Kahairuddin, and Ayyub Niti.

Agustin set new records with her previous two wins.

She won the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 58.3 seconds, breaking the national/senior record and the PON record.

The previous national record was made by Viera Hetari from Maluku in 2011 with a time of 59.64 seconds. Meanwhile, the PON record of 60.31 seconds was made by Maryati from West Nusa Tenggara province at the 2012 Riau PON.

In the women's 200m race, Agustin recorded a time of 23.61 seconds, breaking her own record of 23.63 seconds.

She also bested the record of 23.98 seconds made by Irene Truitje Joseph from Maluku at the 2000 East Java PON.

These are extraordinary achievements, considering that this was Agustin's first stint at the PON, the biggest multi-event sports event in the country.

The three-gold haul has opened opportunities for the 21-year-old to compete in world-class championships such as the Asian Games and the Olympics.

She said that she considers herself as her toughest rival, adding that she needed to top her own efforts to make her family proud.

"My toughest rival is myself. It is just a matter of how to maintain the record I got, but if it can be better, I will definitely win," she remarked.
