Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) - The West Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that 20 people have suffered injuries of minor, moderate, to severe extent due to the earthquake in Bandung District on Wednesday morning.

Head of the Emergency Control and Operations Center of West Java BPBD, Hadi Rahmat, stated that his side, along with related district and city BPBDs, is continuing to assess the number of victims and buildings damaged by the 5.0-magnitude earthquake at 9:41 local time.

"There are 20 people injured, consisting of one with minor injury, 14 with moderate injuries, and five with serious injuries, who were referred to Kertasari Hospital and Kertasari Community Health Center," he remarked on Wednesday.

Based on the data received at 12:50 local time, he stated that the impacts of the earthquake were felt in Tarumajaya Village, Cihawuk and Cibeureum in Kertasari Sub-District, and then in the villages of Margamukti, Cikawao, Pinggirsari, and Bojongmanggu in Bandung District.

Moreover, the villages of Barusari, Pasirwangi, Sarimukti, Talaga, Sirnajaya, and Mekarjaya in Garut District were affected by the earthquake.

He remarked that the earthquake damaged eight houses, two health facilities, two public facility buildings, one educational facility, and one place of worship in Bandung District. Meanwhile, in Garut, seven houses and one educational facility were damaged.

His side and the district and city BPBD continue to coordinate to assess the victims and damage caused by the earthquake.

Based on the West Java BPBD report, the earthquake was felt in Bandung District, Bandung City, Cimahi City, West Bandung District, Garut District, and also across West Java.

"The earthquake was felt strongly for three to five seconds. We urge the public to remain calm and look for a safe place," Rahmat stated.

In addition, the earthquake disrupted the journey of 11 trains that had to make extraordinary stops and the cancellation of 14 Whoosh Fast Train schedules.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the activity of the Garsela fault triggered a series of these shallow earthquakes in Bandung District.

The agency also confirmed that the earthquake cannot potentially cause a tsunami.
