Bandar Lampung (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has stepped up its battle capacity by adding two domestically manufactured offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) to its arsenal.

"We name these two OPVs KRI Lukas Rumrokem-392 and KRI Raja Haji Fisabilillah-391," Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali remarked during the launch of the new ships at a shipyard in Bandar Lampung City, Lampung, on Friday.

He underscored that the two patrol vessels built by national young talents are part of the efforts made by the Ministry of Defense to boost the aptitude of the TNI AL.

"We are also aiming to safeguard the maritime sovereignty of Indonesia, a country made up of islands," the admiral remarked.

Ali further stated that the newly launched OPVs would be equipped with anti-aircraft and underwater weaponry.

"The plan is to make the patrol vessels capable of serving as part of our striking force as well by equipping them with aerial and naval (offensive) capabilities, ultimately strengthening the weaponry system of the TNI AL," he remarked.

The navy leader underscored that the OPVs, measuring 98 meters in length, 13.50 meters in width, and 6.90 meters in height, have a cruising speed of 20 knots, with a top speed of 28 knots.

"Designed as monohull ships, the OPVs are able to perform well in terms of velocity, making them highly suitable for law enforcement and search and rescue missions," he elaborated.

He then stated that the vessels have Leonardo cannons, Escribano cannons, and Roketsan surface-to-surface missile systems installed.

"These ships surely have excellent battle prowess. Moreover, the OPVs are equipped with the Terma decoy launching system that can protect them from naval threats," he concluded.
