Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Youth and Sports, Dito Ariotedjo, and Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergey Tolchenov, explored sports cooperation between the two countries during a meeting on Wednesday.

"We have several sports programs and wish to establish cooperation with Indonesia," Tolchenov said, according to an official statement released by the ministry.

At the meeting, Tolchenov outlined the general condition of sports development in Russia at present, and how the Russian government, through its Ministry of Sports, is building and developing sports.

The ambassador also discussed the agenda for the commemoration of diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia in 2025.

According to him, Russia plans to hold friendly sports matches between the two countries for the commemoration.

Meanwhile, Minister Ariotedjo welcomed the offer of partnership in sports.

He said that Indonesia and Russia have a good relationship that has been established for a long time, therefore the exploration of sports cooperation needs to be followed up.

"Moreover, the offered programs are specific," he added.

In particular, the ministry wants to promote traditional Indonesian martial art pencak silat in Russia through the cooperation, he informed.

President-elect Prabowo Subianto, who is also chairperson of the International Pencak Silat Federation (Persilat), is striving to get pencak silat included in the Olympics in the future, Ariotedjo said.

Meanwhile, the proposed friendly matches will not only involve football, but also other sports like volleyball, which is popular in Indonesia.

"There is a lot that can be carried out under cooperation with Russia. For now, we will focus on the sports programs that have been proposed," the minister said.
