Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, is exploring cooperation with China's Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI) for the construction of breakwaters and sea dikes.

He emphasized the importance of building a physical model of sea dikes using the Water Resources Laboratory in Bandung and the Coastal Laboratory in North Bali.

"This is a transfer of knowledge from China to Indonesia. The financing plan will involve a loan scheme," Hadimuljono stated in a press release from the PUPR Ministry on Thursday.

During his recent visit to China, Hadimuljono met with NHRI on September 24 to explore collaborative opportunities for constructing breakwaters and various types of sea dike structures in Indonesia.

According to Hadimuljono, the meeting will be followed by a visit from the NHRI team to Indonesia. The Chinese counterparts will review data and basic design studies prepared by experts from South Korea, the Netherlands, and the PUPR Ministry team.

Traditional breakwaters, typically made of crushed stone from mountain blasting, take longer to construct and are vulnerable to storm damage.

In response, NHRI is developing an innovative caisson-shaped breakwater, featuring a design resembling the number eight on top and an elliptical bottom planted deep in the ground.

This innovation has already been implemented along 27 kilometers of coastline in China's Jiangsu Province. It has proven to be more wave-resistant, reduces construction time by up to threefold, and offers cost savings of up to 30 percent.

This structure is also suitable for riverbank protection and is being adapted for use in windmill foundations.

Meanwhile, the ministry’s lead engineer, Arie Setiadi, noted that the North Coast of Java faces the threat of coastal sinking, with land subsiding at a rate of 15-16 centimeters per year, compounded by significant soft soil issues.

"We are currently gathering data to build 22 kilometers of sea dikes from Bekasi to Tangerang. This project will also be integrated into a highway system to help reduce congestion in Jakarta," Setiadi explained.
