Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi met with the EU Special Representative for the Gulf Region, Luigi Di Maio, to discuss developments in the Middle East, particularly Palestine and Lebanon.

During the meeting on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday local time, Marsudi expressed concern over the escalation of the conflict in Lebanon amid Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip.

"Indonesia is very concerned about the development of the security situation in Lebanon. Do not make the current situation in Ukraine, Palestine, and Lebanon 'a new normal,'" Marsudi told Di Maio, according to a statement released on Thursday.

The minister outlined a number of developments in joint steps taken by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in promoting peace and independence for Palestine, including a ministerial meeting on the joint initiative of the OIC and the EU planned for Thursday.

The ministerial meeting was entitled "The situation in Gaza and the implementation of a two-state solution as a step towards a just and comprehensive peace."

During their meeting, Marsudi and Di Maio also discussed potential cooperation that could be explored with the EU in the Gulf region, including through collaboration with the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC).

The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Retno Marsudi also expressed her appreciation for the EU's position in supporting a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
