Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) asked House of Representatives (DPR) members elected for the 2024–2029 term to prioritize legislative products, such as the bill on the Protection of Domestic Workers (PPRT).

The commission also called for the revision of the Human Trafficking Law and the Indigenous Peoples' Bill and the ratification of the Optional Protocol Convention Against Torture (OPCAT) to be prioritized by the new members.

"To the new members of DPR, we ask for prioritizing discussions on several legislative products related to human rights that are still pending," the chair of Komnas HAM, Atnike Nova Sigiro, said in a statement released by her office on Tuesday.

Her party also urged the DPR to strengthen public participation in the process and substance of drafting future legislations.

She reminded members of the DPR to prioritize human rights in every legislative product, especially in legislations related to development and investment.

Komnas HAM also asked DPR to strengthen supervision of the implementation of the duties of ministries/institutions that are closely related to human rights.

The step will strengthen government administration and respect for human rights by the business sector to advance, fulfill, and protect human rights for the entire community, Sigiro said.

Related to institutions, Sigiro requested support from the DPR to strengthen and provide resource support for her party.

"We are committed to strengthening the partnership between the DPR in responding to human rights issues and public-concerning situations," she said.

As many as 580 members of the DPR and 152 senators of the Regional Representative Council, who were elected based on the Decree of the Indonesian General Election Commission concerning the Results of the 2024 Legislative Election for the 2024–2029 period, were inaugurated on Tuesday at the MPR/DPR/DPD Building in Senayan, Jakarta.
