Jakarta (ANTARA) - Nine members of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) were sworn in as the MPR speaker and deputy speakers for the 2024-2029 parliamentary term during the parliament's plenary session on Thursday.

The new MPR speaker, Ahmad Muzani of the Gerindra Party, succeeds Bambang Soesatyo of the Golkar Party. Muzani previously served as an MPR deputy speaker in the last parliamentary term.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Muhammad Syarifuddin administered the oath of office to the newly elected MPR speaker and deputy speakers.

After the oath-taking, the new MPR speaker and deputy speakers signed the official minutes of the ceremony and received congratulatory remarks from the Chief Justice.

House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani, reelected for a second term, and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Speaker Sultan Najamuddin, along with their deputy speakers, attended the inauguration.

The MPR leadership consists of eight MPs representing each party faction in the DPR, plus one representative from the DPD.

The deputy speakers include Bambang Wuryanto from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Kahar Muzakir from the Golkar Party, Rusdi Kirana from the National Awakening Party (PKB), Eddy Soeparno from the National Mandate Party (PAN), and Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono from the Democratic Party.

Lestari Moerdijat of the NasDem Party and Hidayat Nur Wahid of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) are continuing their terms as MPR deputy speakers.

The DPD is represented by first-term senator Abcandra Muhammad Akbar Supratman, 26, the youngest MPR deputy speaker in the nation's history.

The induction of MPR members, including the 580 DPR members and 152 Regional Representatives Council (DPD) senators elected in the February 2024 general election, was held at the Parliament Complex on Tuesday morning.

The number of DPR members increased from 575 to 580, while the number of DPD members grew from 136 to 152 due to the creation of new provinces.
