Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi and former Vice President Jusuf Kalla were awarded by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for their contributions to promoting world peace and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The "Peace Mujahid" Award was conferred to Kalla and the "Diplomacy Mujahidah" Award to Marsudi by MUI Chairperson M. Anwar Iskandar.

"Mujahid" and its feminine form "mujahidah" mean "one who fights for Islam" in Arabic.

"They have made their contributions based on the principles of humanity and our Constitution, which mandates that independence is the right of all nations," Iskandar stated during the award ceremony on Thursday.

MUI Chairperson for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs, Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, noted that the awards were given in recognition of the efforts made by Marsudi and Kalla for peace and freedom.

Hakim highlighted that the two figures have done more than merely lead negotiations; they have also worked towards fostering understanding between various perspectives and demonstrated their sincere commitment to world peace.

"The two figures reflect leadership based on peace, dialogue, and sincerity," Sudarnoto affirmed.

Meanwhile, Kalla emphasized the need for collective action in resolving global conflicts. He also pointed out that the conflict in Palestine, due to Israel's aggression, has spread to other countries in the Middle East, such as Lebanon.

"We hope the conflict will be resolved for the sake of global peace," he said.

Marsudi stated that Indonesia will always play its role in advocating for the Palestinian cause, including encouraging more countries to recognize Palestine, as she had done during the recently concluded UN General Assembly session.

She mentioned that recognizing Palestine will allow it to become an equal member of the global community and bolster the spirit of Palestinians in their struggle for independence.

"Indonesia chooses to continue advocating for humanity and defending what is right," she pointed out.
