Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Foreign Affairs Ministry has confirmed that Vice President Ma'ruf Amin will serve as head of the Indonesian delegation at the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in Laos next week.

"Vice President Amin will lead the Indonesian delegation and will attend all meetings, both ASEAN plenary sessions and ASEAN interface meetings," the ministry's Director General of ASEAN Cooperation Sidharto R. Suryodipuro announced at a press conference on Friday.

He said that the vice president will deliver a key message on the achievements and follow-up of the results of Indonesia's ASEAN leadership last year.

He will also convey a message on the importance of increasing ASEAN's capacity as a center for global growth and stability as well as strengthening ASEAN institutions and regional stability, Suryodipuro added.

The Palestinian issue will also be one of the priorities underlined by Amin at the summit, he said.

The issue is important since it is related to the protection of civilians and respect for international norms and laws that must be adhered to by ASEAN countries, he explained.

Suryodipuro said that Amin will attend interface meetings with parliamentary representatives through the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), business representatives through the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, and youth representatives, in addition to the main meetings of the ASEAN Summit and with dialogue partners.

He added that the vice president's presence in place of President Joko Widodo at the series of ASEAN Summits is inseparable from the dynamics of the transition of the government from President Widodo to President-elect Prabowo Subianto this month.

Suryodipuro assured that the transition will not affect Indonesia's recognition of the importance of ASEAN's position and role in the region, although usually, the head of the national delegation at the ASEAN Summit is the head of state.

Moreover, the commitment to strengthen Indonesia-ASEAN cooperation has been demonstrated by the future government, namely through a series of visits made by Prabowo to several countries in Southeast Asia last month before his inauguration as President, he added.
