In a statement on Sunday, Bapanas Director of Food and Nutrition Awareness, Nita Yulianis, said Denmark’s support and input are crucial for formulating and executing comprehensive action plans to reduce FLW.
She noted that the Food and Feed Safety Division of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) had committed to helping Indonesia reduce food waste by strengthening strategic sector cooperation.
Bapanas and the DVFA held a bilateral discussion on October 10 and 11 in Jakarta.
Yulianis expressed confidence that international assistance would help Indonesia intensify its efforts to reduce FLW and promote a circular economy.
“Moreover, support and input from the DVFA are closely related to FLW data collection and the implementation of incentives aimed at reducing food waste in Indonesia,” she added.
Based on a Bapanas study, Indonesia's FLW between 2000 and 2019 amounted to 23–48 million tons per year, or the equivalent of 115–184 kilograms per capita annually.
Yulianis explained that food waste had resulted in losses of up to Rp551 trillion (US$35.2 billion) each year, or around 4–5 percent of Indonesia's gross domestic product.
“Cross-sector commitment is essential to achieving the target of reducing FLW by 75 percent by 2045,” she said.
She mentioned that her office is determined to promote synergy and collaboration among all relevant stakeholders to address FLW issues, which affect not only Indonesia's food security but also the sustainability of its environment and economy.
Meanwhile, Gudrun Sandø, a special adviser at DVFA's Food and Feed Safety Division, noted that her team held a meeting with the Indonesian government on August 27 to push for concrete joint actions against FLW.
She emphasized that Denmark remains committed to assisting Indonesia, a longtime bilateral partner, in addressing its FLW challenges.
