Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar accentuated the role of public-private partnership (PPP) in speeding up forest and land rehabilitation and the construction of nurseries in several regions of the country.

At the inauguration of the Liang Anggang Nursery in South Kalimantan on Monday, Minister Bakar highlighted that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) during his administration emphasized forest and land rehabilitation activities should result in the reduction of deforestation areas.

Hence, Bakar explained that her side encourages cooperation between the government and the private sector, especially those experienced in providing plant seeds on a large scale in forest and land rehabilitation activities.

"The PPP is very important and is in the spotlight on the international stage," she remarked.

In addition to Liang Anggang, Indonesia has other large nurseries, such as Mentawir near the IKN Nusantara Capital City; in Rumpin, West Java; Toba, North Sumatra; Likupang, North Sulawesi; Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara; Mandalika, West Nusa Tenggara; and one mangrove nursery in Bali.

Moreover, one nursery is currently under construction in South Sumatra.

Some of these nurseries are developed under the PPP cooperation.

"The provision of seeds on a large scale through the large nurseries will encourage forest and land rehabilitation activities, especially on critical lands," Bakar remarked.

Furthermore, planting activities are conducted in flood- and landslide-prone areas, reservoir and dam areas, and basin areas in all ecosystems.

Earlier, Bakar drew attention to the improvement in the environment quality index (IKLH).

"The environment quality index has improved from 68.23 in 2015 to 72.54 in 2023," the minister noted on October 4 during an international seminar held by the University of Indonesia.
