Semarang, C Java (ANTARA) - The Social Affairs Ministry has spent Rp2.6 billion (or around US$164 thousand) in carrying out the food assistance program for the elderly in Semarang city, Central Java.

Minister of Social Affairs, Saifullah Yusuf, stressed that the assistance program must run smoothly and be on target.

"The deputy minister and I went around to check whether our program implementation is right on target and according to the President's directive," he said here on Tuesday.

In Semarang, he visited 86-year-old Sri Amini, one of the recipients of the food aid.

The minister said that Sri Amini is eligible for the assistance because she meets all the criteria: she is older than 75 and is living alone as she does not have a family.

She will receive assistance in the form of nutritious food delivered to her house every day for breakfast and lunch. The food delivery will be coordinated by a community group in North Semarang called Semut Berkah.

Furthermore, she will receive other basic necessities and a sleeping mattress.

During his visit to Semarang, Yusuf said that the government has distributed assistance worth Rp71.9 billion or around US$4.5 million in total, comprising food assistance for the elderly living alone, the Family Hope Program (PKH), assistance for orphans (YAPI), and the social rehabilitation aid program (ATENSI).

He also asked the Semarang city government and the public to be actively involved in the improvement of Integrated Data on Social Welfare so that the provision of social assistance can be on target.
