According to Nurofiq, the transportation sector is still one of the main causes of air pollution and contributes around 40 percent of the pollutants causing air pollution.
"We will urge the Ministry of Transportation to tighten the installation of the converter to hold the pollutant," he stated on Friday.
Furthermore, he would communicate with the DKI Jakarta provincial government for a roadmap to accelerate the electrification of mass transportation as part of the emissions reduction from the transportation sector.
At the same time, his side will also take action against coal-using industries and open burning practices that contribute to air pollution conditions in Jakarta and its surrounding areas.
The minister said he had identified around 300 business units using coal-fired boilers, contributing to the concentration of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) which has an impact on health when inhaled.
As an initial step, the ministry will inspect the compliance of the company using coal-fired boilers. If any violation is found, administrative sanctions as a first warning will be imposed, followed by further action.
Firm steps will be taken because the results of coal combustion contribute almost 14-16 percent of pollution in Jakarta.
In addition, he would oversee the roadmap for the gradual cessation of Steam Power Plants (PLTU) carried out by the state-owned electricity company, PT PLN, including the Suralaya PLTU in Banten.
"Those are our targets. Based on our studies for the past few years, one of the biggest sources is the PLTU. We will also fix the problems within Jakarta and its surrounding areas," he added.
