"The whirlwind damaged dozens of houses in 11 sub-districts," said Medi Abdul Hakim, head of the BPBD's Emergency and Logistics Division, on Sunday.
He noted that the whirlwind hit the sub-districts of Nyalindung, Parungkuda, Jampang Tengah, Ciambar, Purabaya, Parakansalak, Nagrak, Cibadak, Cicantayan, Caringin, and Bojonggenteng.
Additionally, torrential rain coupled with strong winds triggered a landslide in Cicurug Sub-district, he added.
According to Hakim, the two disasters did not result in any casualties or injuries but forced 11 of the 139 affected residents to vacate their homes.
He assured that all affected residents received emergency assistance. Meanwhile, the displaced residents are currently taking shelter in the homes of their relatives.
Hakim also reported that the disasters caused minor damage to 37 houses, medium damage to 13 houses, and severe damage to another. Most of the houses suffered damage to their roofs.
"Leaders and disaster mitigation teams in the sub-districts are still assessing the economic losses caused by the disasters. It should be noted that the whirlwind also knocked down a number of large trees," he pointed out.
Hakim appealed to the public to be aware of the risks of hydrometeorological disasters, such as whirlwinds, landslides, and floods, during periods of continuous heavy rain and strong winds.
He suggested that Sukabumi residents prepare for these risks by moving to safer locations in the event of such extreme weather.
