Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-owned oil and gas company Pertamina announced its support for the Zero Routine Flaring (ZRF) Initiative, launched by the World Bank, as part of the company's efforts to support the sustainable energy transition at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

"This commitment is Pertamina's real step in reducing emissions and contributing to global efforts to reduce the impact of climate change," President Director of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) Zulfi Hadi said in a statement from Pertamina received here, Tuesday.

Pertamina is the only Indonesian company supporting the ZRF Initiative, highlighting its strong commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, or even sooner.

Hadi explained that the ZRF Initiative seeks to secure commitments from governments and global oil and gas companies to end routine flaring by 2030. This goal will be pursued through regulatory changes, technology innovation, and financial cooperation.

He emphasized that while the company recognizes the importance of meeting the growing demand for energy to support economic growth, it remains committed to doing so in an environmentally responsible way.

To achieve sustainable operations, Pertamina has adopted the ZRF principle to eliminate routine gas flaring—a critical step in reaching its emission reduction targets.

As part of the national strategy, Pertamina’s commitment aligns with the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), which support the global climate goals outlined in the Paris Agreement (COP21), Hadi added.

Meanwhile, Global Director for the World Bank Demetrios Papathanasiou lauded the step and called Pertamina an important partner in Southeast Asia.

As stated in Pertamina's release, Papathanasiou highlighted the company’s significant role in the region, noting that the company produces over one million barrels of oil per day and plays a pivotal role in Indonesia’s economy.

"Pertamina's step to develop oil and gas without gas flaring is an extraordinary ambition," he added.

He also expressed enthusiasm for working with Pertamina on the Global Flaring and Flaring Reduction Initiative.
