Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia affirmed its commitment to eradicating drug trafficking at the 3rd Intersessional Meeting of the 67th Session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna, Austria, from November 12–14, 2024.

Deputy for Law and Cooperation of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Agus Irianto informed that Indonesia is implementing several strategies to address the drug problem.

They include reducing demand, conducting law enforcement and community empowerment, eliminating illegal crops, and increasing public awareness, he added.

"All of these efforts are designed by considering demographic, cultural, social, and geographical aspects, based on the three international conventions on narcotics," Irianto said in a statement released by his office on Monday.

As a member of the CND for 2024–2027, Indonesia has affirmed its commitment to implementing the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances, and 1988 UN Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.

According to Irianto, marijuana is a narcotic with the highest consumption rate in Indonesia due to its cheap price and the ability to be grown in several regions of the country, including Aceh Province.

To handle this problem, the government is taking serious measures through an alternative development strategy integrated with poverty alleviation efforts, he informed.

He said that the Indonesian government believes that poverty is at the root of the problem, which must be resolved to support alternative development programs.

In addition, Irianto emphasized the importance of effective policy coordination at the national, bilateral, regional, and international levels.

This is expected to strengthen alternative development programs, which would not only help eradicate illegal cultivation, but also provide business opportunities for people in drug-prone areas.

"With an inclusive and sustainable approach, cooperation between countries can be encouraged to overcome illicit drug trafficking," he said.
