Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is promoting transmigration, entailing the relocation of people from one region to another, in the hopes of fostering shared economic benefits both for newcomers and local residents, Transmigration Minister Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara stated.

Suryanagara explained that a region designated as a transmigration zone is designed not only to host transmigrants but also to grow as a peaceful region that equally brings progress to local residents.

"Thus, prosperity should not solely belong to transmigrants but also to those residing around a transmigration area," he stated in Jakarta on Monday.

On that note, Suryanagara invited investors to participate in developing such areas by establishing or improving health and educational facilities and infrastructure to enhance the living quality of transmigrants and locals.

Earlier on October 29, he affirmed that one of the top objectives of his newly established ministry was elevating the living standard of people nationwide to alleviate poverty.

"Our main focus is no longer merely the relocation of people, a measure misinterpreted as transferring poverty from one place to another in the past. Instead, we will exert all-out efforts to alleviate poverty, boosting people's welfare," he remarked.

He added that the Transmigration Ministry is committed to helping boost the productivity of transmigrants, including by involving them in economic initiatives comprising those aimed at pursuing national food self-sufficiency.

The minister expressed belief that by contributing to the economy of their new place, transmigrants will be able to foster a sense of unity with native residents of the region and help the government actualize equitable welfare.

Suryanagara stated that his side would broaden the focus of transmigration beyond economic purposes by paying equal attention to the need to enhance the quality of human resources through socio-cultural approaches.

"For instance, we are planning to pay special attention to the revitalization of 10 transmigration zones that have been set up in Papua," he pointed out.
